Dragonfly Tattoo

More and more women are deciding to get dragonfly tattoos nowadays. So, I thought that I would talk a little about these magical creatures and what makes them so special. Dragonflies are a unique insect that get’s their name from the fact that they sort of look like a flying dragon. Dragonflies typically range between a few inches long all the way up to 7 1/2 inches long. The longest species of dragonflies in the world live in Hawaii and can get up to 7 and a 1/2 inches in length. Dragonflies have two large semi translucent wings that help them fly at speeds up to thirty miles an hour. They often live anywhere from 6 months all the way up to 7 years which is very old indeed for the insect world. And many cultures around the world have symbolism attributed to these fine insects. Since the dragonfly tattoo in the picture is of the American style let’s take a quick moment for me to tell you a wives tale that early American colonist had about the dragonfly. The early settlers to America believed that the dragonfly was the "Devils darning needle". Thus the dragonfly would sew the lips of cursing men and lying children shut. I know quite a few men and children who would be in big trouble if this was actually the case.

Dragonfly tattoos are a pretty popular design choice for women these days. They have a lot of great qualities about them that can make for a very attractive tattoo and one that has a rich symbolism connected to it. Historically different cultures viewed the dragonfly very differently. For example in the west it was often associated with the devil and thought to be an evil creature because of it’s wings. There are many myths in western lore where dragonflies would do bad things to little children and they were definitely associated with the devil. However this is not a universal understanding of this creature. For example in most Asian cultures the dragonfly is seen to be a beautiful creature that symbolizes freedom, happiness and even harmony. For many women the dragonfly tattoo can represent, strength, endurance, because they are capable of long durations of flight. Of course there are positive aspects of dragonfly tattoo. Dragonfly tattoos can often represent a design motif that can cut through all ages, cultures and genders. And there are a wide variety of styles and colors that you can choose from.
